ROAD TRIP DAY TWENTY-ONE: I am writing to you from the car again, watching the countryside slip past my window. Changing from gorgeous green vineyards 🍇 clinging to the hillsides of the Bordeaux region, the scenery is now rolling hay fields of the Charente-Maritime region.
We are headed north towards Île de Ré, an island 🏝 off the west coast of France. Thirty kilometers (19 miles) long and five kilometers (3 miles) wide. Île de Ré is a popular summer destination for Parisians. With the annual vacations and good weather, I expect to feel the intensity of the burgeoning season and its incoming visitors. The 2.9 km (1.8 mi) Île de Ré bridge, completed in 1988, connects it to La Rochelle on the mainland.
As the second to last stop of our road trip, we will be on the island for almost a week. 🌊 🏖 While most of the beaches in France are not dog-friendly, especially in the summer, I found a house close to one of the few available. The girls love the beach and playing in the sand. 🚴 Renting bikes is a must on the island – it is the main transport here and the best way to get around. Parking is a premium, and this location is exceptionally family-friendly with loads of campsites throughout.
I will introduce you to Île de Ré throughout the week. For today’s story, I give you a montage of Saint-Emilion, sans wine. Of course, I introduce you to some of the history of this spectacular French village. But my goal today was to share an alternative story through video and photos. I hope you enjoy it.
