"I don't really consider myself a lazy person - just a slow one. And it's hard to be slow around others, with their fussing about. Being on your own terms is much easier when you're alone.

'You're going to turn into a prune,' she said. And in response, I immediately slid underwater, her words now unintelligible. Womwomwom, she rattled on. When I finally came up for air, she still had more to say.

'Are you sure you won't come away with us this weekend?'

I hate to leave the estate. While I usually have an enjoyable time in the end and lovely memories, it is the act of leaving that makes me want to stay. It's so fussy and cumbersome.

There is nothing I love more than an empty house. Especially when it rains - it is so moody outside, and then it's perfectly respectable to shut yourself in. But when the sun is shining, you're supposed to be outside, taking in fresh air. Which is fine, I suppose… I like to have choices. But it's best to be comfortable next to a fire.

‘What will you do while we are gone?' she inquired, waiting.

I lazily move in the bathtub, buoyed and tepid; I consider what to say, something that will please her so she will leave.

What I really want to do is watch the birds play from behind the curtains. When they think nobody is watching them, they play better, and they fight and cuddle, hop and pick at bugs on the ground & rest in the sunshine with their wings spread out.

After that, I think I will take a very hot bath until I turn into a prune. I will wait until the water turns cold. And then I will eat chocolate cake in bed instead of at the dining table."
