Day Eighteen: We visit the night Christmas market at Hôtel de Ville, Paris, France.
Admittedly, I was confused by the term “hotel” for my first few visits to France. I thought it was some sort of fancy five-star place to tuck into at night. Oops! Little did I know that the word “hotel” can mean many things here in France. In this context, the Hôtel de Ville de Paris is the City Hall.
This building and location has a fascinating history, and if you are at all interested, I suggest visiting the Musée Carnavalet in the Marais. I absolutely love the paintings and 3D exhibits on HDV. She has strong ties to my beloved Saint Genevieve too.
Construction for this building began in 1533, with the first stone laid on July 15th. After being burnt down during the Paris Commune (1871), the town hall was rebuilt in neo-Renaissance style during the Third Republic. But what I love is that the frescoes on the arches of the village hall represent the sixteen regions of France, including Brittany and Burgundy in the Eastern arches, Normandy in the Southern arches, and Provence in the Western.
Today, we get to play in her shadows and enjoy the sights of the marché Noël at Hôtel de Ville Paris.
