Have you heard of the 5-4-3-2-1 packing rule? It’s a simple and effective way to ensure you don’t overpack for your next trip. Here’s how it works:

5 - Bring 5 sets of clothing.
This includes everything from shirts and pants to underwear and socks. Stick to neutral colors and versatile pieces you can mix and match to create multiple outfits.

4 - Pack 4 pairs of shoes.
Shoes can take up a lot of space in your luggage, so it’s essential to be strategic. Bring one pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneakers, one pair of dress shoes (if needed), one pair of seasonal shoes (such as sandals or boots), and one pair of flats. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane.

3 - Bring 3 accessories.
Accessories can help you change up your outfits without packing more clothes. Bring a scarf, a statement necklace, and a belt to add variety to your outfits. Make sure they can be worn with multiple outfits to maximize their usefulness.

2 - Pack 2 bags.
You’ll need a carry-on and a personal item bag for your flight. Choose bags that are lightweight and easy to carry, and make sure they meet the airline’s size requirements. This will help you avoid checked baggage fees and make getting through the airport a breeze.

I generally bring a hard-sided rolling carry-on and a tech backpack that I also tuck a small crossbody purse into for running around.

1 - Remember the 1-quart bag for liquids.
When it comes to liquids, stick to the 3-1-1 rule: 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item, in a 1-quart (1-liter) clear plastic bag, with one bag per passenger.
