Welcome to Île de Brehat! I tried posting a couple videos yesterday but, alas, rural France + internet = consistently inconsistent. 😆
EDIT: Regarding the last slide (and the videos I posted yesterday too), I have reported the video glitch to Instagram. 😬
Île-de-Bréhat is a tiny French commune & island located in the department of Côtes-d’Armor, north of the tip of Arcouest in Brittany. It is made up of the Bréhat archipelago.
I love this place for the fact that you can only access it by ferry and from there, the entire island is navigated by foot or bicycles. 🚲 Narrow alleys and passages create a maze amongst centuries old stone houses 🏠 with jaw-dropping gardens. These homes (see an example video in my story for the next 24h), have been passed down through the generations and their enormous yards protected throughout the years. It’s like walking through a professionally landscaped park.
There are mimosas, fig trees, eucalyptus, ceanoths, echiums, agapanthus, and TONS of hydrangeas. The geraniums climb along the fronts of the houses. There are even palm trees! It is one of the rare places in “North Brittany” where Mediterranean plants can grow.
The main island, is 3.5 km wide and 1.5 km maximum and,at high tide, brings together two islands by a causeway: the “North Island” with the relief of moors and the more flowery “South Island”.
Bréhat was the first natural site classified in France on July 13, 1907.
Thanks to those of you who joined my Instagram live from the island today!
Keep an eye out for my upcoming vlog about Île de Brehat. 👏👏
Bisous and big hugs 🤗 from France,
Shannon
