Let’s go for a carriage ride!

My neighbors Dénis and Martine own a lovely draft horse that I nicknamed Izzie. Sometimes she lives in my lower pasture. I give her brush downs and carrots; and she stamps out the dreaded stinging nettle. It’s a great exchange!

Izzie is trained as a carriage horse. In part of this video, you’ll hear Martine talking to her (“Go on, my mother, go on. Up! Very good, very good. Cool cool cool.”).

The leather leads tap her lightly on the back to encourage her forward and also gives her gentle direction right or left.

Dénis knows my horsemanship experience so he handed over the reins to me at the end of the video!

There are over SEVENTY different horse-drawn vehicles, each with their own history and usage. But Martine and Dénis primarily do this for fun on the weekends, with very short trips between his house and his mother’s.

Their family and previous generations have lived in this village for hundreds of years. Dénis is one of eight children, all farmers.

I hope you have a super fun weekend ahead.
